What should a scientist know to work well with the media? How do you write a press release or a grant proposal? How can you communicate your findings to a general audience without oversimplifying your work? Discover and apply tools for science communication.

For the scientific community, publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals is the main and most important way of communicating the results of research; however, scientists need to learn, as well, how to communicate effectively with the media, public officials, and the general public. The skills needed for addressing these public audiences differ from those needed when communicating with peers, especially when using means such as video or writing for the popular press. But this needn't be a problem - excellent communication can be learned!

This course introduces the concepts of public communication of science. We look at the basics of good communication and we will try them out in the context of speaking in front of a camera. This active learning' approach engages you in developing effectively your presentation skills.

Furthermore, you will discover a set of tools useful for different purposes, including teaching, working with scientists in other fields and creating presentations that stick in their listeners' minds. The aim of this course is to train young researchers to be able to use these communication skills throughout their careers.

Attention: This course will be held entirely in English! It allows for extended debate and all students will be expected to ask and answer questions and to be able to discuss and present the subject of their PhD project in English. Native English speakers are welcome !
